How will you approach 2018 differently to 2017?
2018 Is a new year and with new bikes and new challenges. It feels fantastic to be on cutting-edge technology from Fox and Shimano and now have direct support from Canyon. All new equipment will give us an edge at the big races like Cape Epic and the Worlds. I will also add several insane trail record attempts perhaps the Colorado Trail and definitely The Massanutten Ring of Fire in the spring.
Which race do you most look forward to?
My biggest objectives this year are to win the USA National Championships and assist my teammates at the Cape Epic. Training for me includes a lot of structure or a lot of fun. I get in some amazing quality intervals with our new 4iiii power meters
How do you train off the bike?
I love trail building, I enjoy doing rock work so I do some breaking rocks with the sledge hammer and moving big rocks when I can, this is killer workout for me it’s like the gym but you actually get something back from it after you’re done. Once a week running and some occasional yoga keep me balanced and for some fun I take the kids bowling.
What element of your setup could you not do without?
A dropper post is one thing I have come to love, I was so stubborn at first but now it’s letting me hit some bigger jumps and get aggressive on the trail.
Any tips for the rest of us on an effective training session?
Get a power meter and heart rate monitor as this is a great way to measure and motivate yourself. 4iiii Innovations is a new partner for us and they have some really cool products that help you keep pushing and know if you’re improving. Also I think it’s essential to “keep it fun”! Even if I am doing intervals I might use Strava or give my friend a head start and bet a beer on a climb. Whatever you do make it a game and you’ll train even harder.
