How will you approach 2018 differently to 2017?
This year we have some big new sponsors on board like Shimano, Fox and 4iiii. It’s always exciting to have new parts on the bike, but it also takes some work to get familiar with a new setup. We’re also working on a special project with Canyon right now, I can’t wait till we’re able to present in to the public!
Which race do you most look forward to?
My major goal in 2018 is to defend my World Champion title at the 3Epic Marathon race in September. The race is very close to my hometown so I look forward to some good support from my home crowd.
What element of your setup could you not do without?
I would definitely struggle to ride without a power meter. I’ve trained with one for almost 15 years now, basing all my riding on watts. It’s sad, but I’m kind of addicted to it.
How do you train off the bike?
I do a lot of different sports, especially over winter. My favourite right now is Skimo, it’s pretty much the same as mountain biking but on skis. This year’s winter with all the snow was perfect for it. I could do nearly half of my training on the skis, and it’s more comfortable on your but!
Any tips for the rest of us on an effective training session?
Intervals are always important and especially sweet spot intervals marathon racers. But it’s also important to have fun when you’re training, because the brain runs your body and not the opposite!
